Retail bakers sometimes will not be able to provide you with custom decorations or special designs but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

When you hire a caterer for your wedding reception they will often have a pastry chef who creates the wedding cakes.  You will be able to look at books containing their photos of wedding cakes and you should be able to have a sample of the cake.  This is often the least expensive way to go.

Private bakers produce amazing wedding cakes and often this is the only kind of cake they make.  You can order the cake of your dreams and have it tailored specifically to your design.  You can even bring in pictures of wedding cakes you have found in bridal magazines and these bakers will be able to duplicate the design.  These wedding cake specialists are often quite expensive.

Finally, you may be able to find a private baker, a person who makes wedding cakes from their home.  These bakers are less expensive because they have very little overhead and do not advertise.
